Alternatives Update - July 2010

Dear everyone,

Here is a summertime update with some news from 2010 so far, and requests for your prayers for Alternatives over the summer and beyond.

We Are Family

  • Helped 47 young women and 61 children over the past year, with 22 mums and 36 children coming regularly.
  • Started a new Practical Parenting class. Seven mums completed this and got certificates
  • Has some funding for a summer programme of weekly days out in a local park during August – many mums rely on WAF for support and social life, and miss it over the summer.
  • Four of our mums have been to a ‘Y course’ at a local church and two or three families are going on a church-run holiday this summer – please pray for them.
  • The lottery funding for We Are Family lasts for one more year until next June. Please pray as we think about how it might be funded after that.
4 Dads

We are running a pilot project to try and help young, absent dads take on the responsibility of being a better dad and more reliable partner. Thank God that we have four men to run this work, and plenty of funding. Three dads from WAF families came on our recent outings and four came to a BBQ. Their next meeting to plan together is inr early August. Please pray for this.

Education team

Jo is working on developing an interactive website for the Newham Interfaith Sexual Health Forum, which needs input from young people, faith communities and statutory agencies. This is complex and it needs to be finished by next March. Please pray for the right staff to help her in this.

Centre

Our building work at the back is nearly finished. The garage is gone and we have a mini extension and two new rooms for use as small staff or counselling rooms. This is to cope with the expanding team and also the growing number of clients. Our new centre-based Family Support worker is gradually taking on some of the practical help to those referred to us in particular need e.g. with benefits housing etc. Please pray that we continue to meet the needs of all those who come to us with an unexpected pregnancy or for post-abortion support. Many of our clients have complex situations.

Other

Steve Acott is almost halfway through a three-month course of chemotherapy. Please pray for him, Julia and all the family.

With love and many thanks as always for your support and prayers.

Julia and the Alternatives team
