Thank you for all your support for the Banana Eating challenge and helping me to far exceed my target of 100 bananas.
197 bananas were eaten in total by members of St Giles' and St George's during the 24 hours of the challenge and an additional 500 bananas were eaten by City of London Freemen's School.
Many were eaten as snacks, but having a fair trade banana sliced on your breakfast cereal was very popular. Thanks to all the ALDAG Challengers Club members who met on Friday evening and helped out with banana eating and enjoyed the lovely Banana Cake made by Ros Phibbs.
It was great to see Alison Anderson pounding the streets as part of her Marathon training and knowing that she was being fuelled by her fair trade banana.
An outstanding 367,056 people in the UK joined in this event to mark the end of Fair Trade Fortnight and sending a very important message to our retailers.
For anyone who took time to read the notice board at St George's and in particular finding out about the issues around cocoa farming, you will be delighted to hear some really positive news.... Cadburys and the Fair Trade Foundation have just announced plans to achieve Fairtrade certification for Cadbury’s Dairy Milk bar by the end of Summer 2009. This is an amazing step in the right direction – the full press release can be viewed on the Fair Trade Foundation website at www.fairtrade.org.uk.
I will be deflating my banana until next year but would ask you all to keep considering your power as a consumer and selecting Fair Trade wherever you can. Hearing about this major move by Cadburys should empower us all to know that by changing our buying habits and by positive campaigning we can help effect in the way big companies operate and in turn improve lives for people in the poorest countries.
