St Giles Project - February 2009

The furniture has been removed and we are ready to start the building works.
Please continue to pray for this project and for all involved in the day to day progress.

The Choir Vestry

The Choir Vestry

The robes, books, furniture and piano have been removed.

And we see an old fireplace in the corner of the Vestry.

The walls are damaged with many holes and cracks and there are unwanted pipes and conduits.

The carpet is in poor condition so we hope to replace it.

The Choir Vestry safes

The Choir Vestry

The safes have been moved into the corner of the cupboard to provide more floor space.

The cupboard doors need repairing or replacing.

New storage shelves for music are to be made.

The Main Porch

The Main Porch

The Stone floor has been damaged by damp mats and it will be covered with a slope and door matting.

Access for all is a key feature of the restoration work.

We want everyone, no matter how mobile they are to be able to come in and enjoy worship in our parish church.

Inside the porch the paintwork is peeling. It will all be repaired. Loose furniture and notice boards will be returned as needed when the decorators have done their work.

The Welcome Area

The Welcome Area

Experimenting with different items of furniture to go in the welcome area.

This table came from the clergy vestry and needs repairs. The old long low cupboard is now in use at St George’s.

The pews are safely stored in the garage. The small pew will be placed in the porch when the work is finished.

The Old Communion Table

The Old Communion Table

The old communion table was found to be badly damaged with one leg broken and many holes.

The false top had woodworm and has had to be removed. The altar frontals were in a box which was badly damaged and taking up valuable space beside the organ.

A prototype new table for communion which can store the frontals, and yet look identical to the old table when ready for use, is in the hall. This will be used in the church later.

The Old Communion Table

The table was the wrong size and shape and so it was adapted. This table leg was broken some time ago and has been repaired.

It was raised on thick blocks which were fixed to the legs using dowels. A false top was added and this work damaged the table itself.

The Old Communion Table

The table had false ends added and this has damaged the original table and ruined the mouldings.

A softwood top had been added. This has been removed as it was found to have woodworm.

Our Services Continue

Services are happily continuing in St Giles' Hall and the Dell Room The family service is at City of London Freemen's School. The evening service is well attended by choir and congregation. Places have been found to store important items of furniture in the Hall.

The Organ

The Organ

Meanwhile work continues on the organ and the window.

Much of the organ has been removed to the workshops of Griffiths and Cooper.

The console was taken away for a complete overhaul. The area needs a complete clean down and redecoration. We also need a new humidifier.

The Chancel and North Aisle

These areas are ready for the builders to start work. The window is being restored and will be returned this week – weather permitting.

How wonderful to see the work progressing! For many years St Giles had been a great home to me - it's really good to see the restoration task in hand to equip the building for God's purposes in the 21st century.

How good to hear from you Gordon! Yes, it's very exciting. I hope you've seen your "Where are they now?" article on the website.

Love from us all.
