Leatherhead Night Hostel

A homeless man - photo from WikipediaThank you for your long commitment to us all at the Leatherhead Night Hostel – staff and residents alike. And by this I don’t just mean monetary contributions but also the demonstrable acts of kindness you have undertaken for us, such as painting a room, cleaning the drive, cooking meals etc.

Just over 2,000 years ago a baby was born in a stable – homeless. And his story lives on – and what a story! Each of our, up to 12, homeless residents who avail themselves of a bed, a bite to eat and a listening ear, also have a story – few were born in the gutter but many have been pushed and this, not in some far-off desert land, but in leafy, affluent Surrey.

Miracles happen at the Hostel – people for whom others have no regard and who have learned to despise themselves – come to see a future, a future with themselves playing a fulfilling role.

You are a big part of this transition and we thank you all so much.

Here’s a little prayer I felt prompted to write, it’s just called ‘THE HOMELESS’

A PRAYER FOR THE HOMELESS

They’re ragged and smelly
And not worth a light
But in your eyes, Oh Father,
They’re a beautiful sight

They’re drunken and feckless
A blight on creation
But in your eyes, Dear Jesus,
They’re cause for elation

They swear and they curse
In a way that’s quite shameless
But in your eyes, Oh Lord
They’re practically blameless!

They don’t hold a job
Or contribute their share
But in your eyes, Redeemer
They’re precious and rare

So please give us your sight
To view them with favour
To love and to cherish
As you do, Sweet Saviour
