Support for Epsom based Charity

The community in Ashtead and especially the members of St Giles’ and St George’s Churches continue to show growing support for the Epsom based Charity “Through the Roof”.

In particular supporters are raising cash for the overseas part “Wheels for the World”.

This Charity sends old NHS wheelchairs to a workshop in HMP Parkhurst for restoration to almost-new condition.

Prisoners find great satisfaction in this work which helps restore their self worth and dignity.

The hub of operations is a farm near Salisbury where the wheelchairs are received from the prison and loaded into containers for shipping overseas.

Ashtead churches arose to the challenge of collecting £1 a day for the 40 days of Lent and generously sponsored 42 individual wheelchairs raising £1,710.

At the same time staff and patients at Gilbert House Surgery have raised £200 by selling second-hand books.

Many local attractions including Wisley, Bocketts Farm, Leatherhead Theatre and Dorking Halls have supported the Ashtead fundraising events giving tickets as donations for raffle prizes.
